Easy Way? No. Take the Hard Way

Many people have asked "Chloe, how do I better represent myself on Facebook?" My answer is simple.

There are 2 ways, the easy or the hard way.

The Easy Way:

Keep your personal life separate from your professional life, like in real life, you wouldn't burp in front of a potential client would you? or you wouldn't wink at a friend during a meeting.

However on your personal profile, with the right security settings you are free to be yourself.

I for one tend to get sidetracked by friends and sometimes am guilty of posting and commenting on my friends profiles or posts that most would call well... unprofessional.

A change needed to be made, whilst I have a lot of public posts, I also have posts that only specific people can see. I have secret groups tucked away in Facebook for my girls nights out as well as a Public group to cater for those seeking to buy or sell online.

This page was created as a way to publicize the professional side of me and by doing this I do not have to worry about the ramifications that may arise from calling my best friend by a nickname that might seem strange to others, or posting a picture up of my husband and I in a romantic setting, having him be on public display for others to pick at.

The Hard Way.

Well if you have read the above and still want to do this the hard way here goes nothing:

Be Perfect. Do not use Social Media for anything but business. In other words, no matter how much you try to have good netiquette, no matter how much we try to stay "neutral" there will come a time where you might slip up, say something out of place, or upset someone you really didn't mean to upset. Whatever the case, you will trip up and make mistakes, and then the long haul of working your way back up the ladder will begin.

My point is, Social Media is a powerful tool, it can be a wide open sea of consumers ready to bite anything you throw at them or it can be a small fish pond with sharks waiting for you to slip and fall in.

Take my advice, save yourself the grief.
